Viennese audiences had never heard anything like it: Beethoven’s First Symphony opens with a chord that still comes as a surprise today. In his first symphony, the composer writes with remarkable confidence and originality. Innovation became Beethoven’s hallmark: every symphony brought surprises, including the Eighth, whose wit repeatedly confounds listeners’ expectations. Between the two Beethoven works, Kirill Gerstein and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, perform Robert Schumann’s only Piano Concerto – combining lyrical introspection with symphonic breadth.
