Schubert & Schumann

In the winter of 1816-17, Vienna was struck by sheer ‘Rossini mania’. Music by the young Rossini dominated concert programmes, and audiences fell head over heels for his Italian flair. The 20 year-old Franz Schubert was among his admirers. Inspired by Rossini, he composed his Italian Overture in that same year of 1817. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen conducted by Paavo Järvi continue their foray into Schubert’s early work with the Second Symphony. The acclaimed cellist Truls Mørk ends the programme with Robert Schumann’s idiosyncratic Cello Concerto, a work full of intense lyricism and emotional depth.
