About the Event

Performing a new suite by John, exploring interweaving lines, pulsing rhythms and subtle harmonies, plus other original music by both of them, the duo creates chamber music both intricate and simple, exploring textures, colour, and space and with plenty of rhythmic energy!

A study of motion/emotion within the world of groove and pulse.

John Law, a prize-winning classical prodigy on piano, turned away from classical piano studies to pursue jazz and improvised music when he was 23 and has been involved in, and acclaimed for, a wide variety of contemporary jazz and classical projects: from solo piano concerts and albums, through trio and quartet tours and recordings, right through to large scale works for larger, semi- classical ensembles.

He has played at over fifty festivals worldwide including North Sea Jazz Festival (Rotterdam), Delhi International Jazz Festival and London Jazz Festival at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and in clubs and concert halls all over the UK, mainland Europe, North America and beyond, working with musicians as diverse as Gwilym Simcock, Andy Sheppard, Jason Rebello, Tim Garland and Evan Parker. He has recorded over fifty albums. John’s main projects currently are his acclaimed quartet Congregation, playing John’s original music and bringing together acoustic and electronic music, his all-acoustic quartet Re-Creations, featuring Parliamentary Jazz Award winner Sam Crockatt, playing re-imaginings of tunes from jazz/pop/classical and Naissance, an ambient, ECM-style duo with saxophonist/composer Jon Lloyd.

In addition to numerous touring awards and composition commissions, in 2020 John Law was awarded a prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists.

Ant Law is a British guitarist and parliamentary jazz award nominee, who has been described by the Guardian as “a game changer” and “an innovator”. His 8th album ‘Ensconced’ is a collaboration with Milan-born British/Turkish singer Brigitte Beraha and was released (on Ubuntu Music) 16th August 2024. His previous album ‘Same Moon in the Same World’ (Outside in Music) was released on 4th November 2022.

‘Same Moon in the Same World’ is an ongoing collaboration between Ant and the brilliant saxophonist & composer Alex Hitchcock. Recorded in 2020/2021 across multiple continents, bridging the gap between London, Amsterdam and New York, it brings together a stellar cast of guest musicians performing new compositions: vibraphonist Joel Ross, bassists Linda May Han Oh, Ben Williams and Jasper Høiby, and drummers Jeff Ballard, Kendrick Scott, Sun-Mi Hong and Eric Harland.

Ant (the “L”) also co-leads Trio HLK who record/tour with Dame Evelyn Glennie. Trio HLK’s ‘Anthropometricks’ was awarded a 9/10 review in the May 2024 issue of Guitar Techniques Magazine. In addition to leading his own projects, Ant has performed extensively with Tim Garland's band (with Jason Rebello & Asaf Sirkis), featuring on albums 'Songs To The North Sky', 'Return To The Fire' & 'ONE' which was shortlisted for a Grammy and won the Jazzwise Best Album award.
