About the Event
Allan Clayton is joined by two esteemed partners in a celebration of two golden ages of British song, the first rooted in the milieu of Restoration London, the second graced by entrancing settings of the poetry of John Donne by Britten and Elizabeth Maconchy. The latter’s A Hymn to God the Father takes the form of a confession, stripped of all conceit, while Britten’s The Holy Sonnets of John Donne, which received their world première at Wigmore Hall in 1945, plunge deep into Donne’s dark spiritual drama.
