About the Event
Two Miles A Day is a joint project from pianist Jacob Sacks and bassist Eivind Opsvik. They both contribute compositions which explores a wide range of moods and feelings and runs the gamut from swinging tunes to free abstraction while maintaining a playful, creative spirit. On this show saxophonist and flutist Hery Paz will take the place of Mat Maneri In 2005, Pianist Jacob Sacks and bassist Eivind Opsvik had a conversation where they posed the question to one another, “Out of all the remaining living masters, who would you want to play with if you ever got the chance?” The enthusiastic answer was ‘Paul Motian!’ which led to the recording and release of “Two Miles A Day” with Mr. Motian and Mat Maneri. This album has since its release become an underground classic and it led to Jacob and Eivind performing in multiple settings with Paul Motian. They also played many weekends with this band at
Cornelia Street Cafe in Manhattan. After Paul Motian’s passing, they continued to play shows around NYC with esteemed drummers in the community. When it came time to plan a second follow-up album, the decision to include Billy Mintz was an easy one. He’s one of
the great masters of the NY jazz scene, a unique and singular musician who always brings a sense of magic and a wonderful unpredictability to the music. Mat Maneri is another one of those unique musicians who has created his own language and universe within improvised music. Immediately recognizable, he always operates on the highest level of interplay and listening.
