Brooklyn Maqam presents: TAN HAW
About the Event
Brooklyn Maqam is an organization dedicated to presenting Middle Eastern (in particular, Arabic) music, with the goals of expanding its audience, preserving it as an art form, and building community centered around the music.
THIS MONTH:
Tan Haw
In "Grandma's Tapes," Tan Haw presents a repertoire of favorite traditional Iranian classic ballads (Tasnifs)—songs woven deeply into the collective consciousness of generations of Iranians. Drawn from the Radif of Iranian classical music, Setâr and Dotâr will set the stage for vocals, call-and-response, and singalongs.
Tan Haw is the stage name of Mani Nilchiani, an Iranian musician based between Brooklyn and Mexico. Trained in Setâr, vocals, and the Radif tradition, his music grows from Persian classical roots into contemporary experiments across Persian, Azerbaijani, English, and Spanish. Bandcamp Daily's Big Ups calls him "... a radical improviser who explores the intersection of Iranian classical music with various forms of contemporary music." His debut LP, Roya-ye Mahtâb, will be released in Spring 2027.
