Bonuru are definitely one to watch - and they're just getting started!
Thin Places, Bonuru's debut album, is a bold exploration of the parallels between music and landscape. In celtic tradition, a 'thin place' is an area where the barriers between the earth and the spirit world are most permeable.
The album explores the idea of musical expression being analogous to a 'thin place', where both music and landscape act as a pathway to the transcendent.
Written and produced by bandleader and guitarist Jacob Marshall-Tierney, Thin Places is an unlikely melding of genres as diverse as nu jazz, alt rock, soul, dub and psychedelia.
The album features a formidable line-up of accomplished musicians. On saxophone is Flo Redmonds, a London-based musician who recently played a headline show at 606 club. On trombone is multi-instrumentalist and composer Cameron Scott, who recently showcased the Cameron Scott Jazz Orchestra at the EFG London Jazz Festival. On trumpet is the Alfie Buckley of Brass Beats Collective, who has also collaborated previously with Cameron through the Buckely-Scott Quartet. On drums is Jacob’s brother Fabian Marshall-Tierney, known best as the drummer for electropop singer Caswell, who supported Ed Sheeran during his Divide tour.
The album's two singles, Nightjar and Flammarion, have both been met with critical acclaim, having been championed by prestigious Dj’s such as Gilles Peterson, Soweto Kinch and Emily Pilbeam. This has led to multiple appearances on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 6, WWFM and Jazz FM.
The focus track, Calluna, kicks things off with powerful horns and driving rhythms, each acting as exciting harbingers of what to expect on the rest of the album.
'Thin Places' is proudly released through Blue Adventure Records, a label run by NK-OK of Blue Lab Beats's fame.
