About the Event
Borrowed Fire
Every great composer inherits a spark. Some preserve it; others transform it into something entirely their own. In Borrowed Fire, Aleksey Shadrin, Yibai Chen and David Cohen journey through music shaped by the unique sounds, rhythms and traditions of Italy, Hungary, Romania and Spain—reimagined by some of the twentieth century’s most distinctive musical voices.
Stravinsky transforms music attributed to Pergolesi with wit and brilliance; Bartók turns the raw energy of folk music into exhilarating concert works; and Ravel evokes Spain through the hypnotic sway of the Habanera. The journey then moves south with de Falla’s passionate Spanish songs before culminating in the dazzling virtuosity of Catalan cellist-composer Gaspar Cassadó’s Requiebros. From intimate melodies to irresistible dances and fiery virtuosity, this recital reveals how music can cross borders and generations, continually finding new life in the hands of the next artist.
