Benji “Chief” Appiah is a South London-born drummer and percussionist whose dynamic, genre-spanning approach has made him one of the most exciting rhythmic voices in UK jazz. Growing up immersed in a wide range of musical styles, Benji developed a distinctive sound rooted in curiosity, versatility and a deep understanding of rhythm across cultures. A driving force within the contemporary UK jazz scene, he has performed and collaborated with leading artists including Nubya Garcia, Kokoroko, Oscar Jerome, Joe Armon-Jones, Neue Grafik and Alewya. He is also a key member of the influential collectives Steam Down and Orii, both renowned for pushing the boundaries of jazz, soul and electronic music. Known for his powerful groove, musical sensitivity and infectious energy, Benji continues to shape the sound of a new generation of British jazz.
