Wise Post-Bop and Contemporary Jazz
The Aleksander Paal Quartet featuring great pianist Holger Marjamaa, brings together four musicians who have collaborated in various projects over the years and now unite in this lineup
to perform Paal’s compositions, rooted in the post-bop tradition while embracing a contemporary approach to improvisation, the quartet’s music balances strong melodic writing, spontaneous interaction and expressive improvisation. With every performance shaped
by the unique chemistry between the musicians, the music remains both carefully crafted
and open to the unexpected.
Paal playing combines a deep respect for the jazz tradition with a contemporary musical
language, balancing lyrical expression, rhythmic precision and adventurous improvisation.

Holger Marjamaa was born (1992) in Tallinn, Estonia has performed with Lee Ritenour, Chris Botti, Robben Ford, Lizz Wright, David Kikoski, Lonnie Liston Smith, John Riley, Hadrien Feraud, Chico Pinheiro, Steve Wilson, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and many more.
Holger holds many awards in both jazz and classical piano performance, including: Grand Prix at the XXIV International Jazz Piano Competition (Vilnius, Lithuania; 2013); second prize at the II International Tallinn Piano Competition (Tallinn, Estonia; 2011). Marjamaa was also a semi-finalist in the 2018 Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition (since 2019 re- named Herbie Hancock Jazz Piano Competition). the Young Estonian Jazz Talent Award (Tallinn, Estonia; 2013) and a Jazz Musician of the Year Award (Estonia, Tallinn, 2021). He has performed across the United States, Europe and Asia, venues and festivals.
With a busy schedule, Marjamaa was mainly touring with a Grammy Award Winning trumpeter Chris Botti (2019-2023).
Aleksander Paal is an Estonian jazz saxophonist, composer and bandleader whose music draws from the post-bop tradition while embracing a contemporary, personal approach to improvisation and ensemble interplay. As both a leader and sought-after sideman, he has performed extensively throughout Europe in clubs, concert halls and international festivals.
A graduate of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, with additional studies at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar, Paal has established himself as one of the leading voices of his generation in Estonian jazz. He leads several of his own ensembles while also performing with the Estonian Dream Big Band and the New Wind Jazz Orchestra, and has appeared with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, Euroradio Jazz
Orchestra and numerous internationally acclaimed musicians.
As a composer, Paal has written music for both small ensembles and large orchestras, including commissioned works for Jazz Estonia and Jazzkaar. He is currently developing Recalibration, an ongoing concert series presenting original music that explores modern post-bop through a succession of evolving ensemble formats.
