Itamar Borochov Quartet
Lineup
About the Event
One of the most distinctive trumpeters of his generation, New York-based Itamar Borochov brings together the depth and tradition of jazz with the rich musical heritage of the Middle East and North Africa. His music combines jazz with ‘maqam’, the modal language of the region, creating a sound that is lyrical, deeply soulful and full of rhythmic and melodic surprises.
His latest album, Imanu, is his fifth as a leader and follows the acclaimed Arba. Recorded with his longtime quartet of pianist Rob Clearfield, bassist Luca Fattorini and drummer Amir Bar Akiva, the album moves between intimate melodies, powerful improvisation and moments of deep spiritual intensity.
Borochov was a founding member, arranger and co-producer of Yemen Blues, appearing on four of the group’s albums. He has also composed for jazz quartet and string orchestra, and for trumpet and string septet. Winner of the 2020 European L1 Rising Stars Jazz Award, he has toured extensively across four continents, performing at Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Bimhuis and Flagey, as well as the EFG London Jazz Festival and other major international festivals.
“Borochov is a spectacular trumpeter with a voice that’s distinctly his own, and unites the sounds of Israel, the Middle East, North Africa and American jazz music into a beautiful and seamless whole.”
