ABOUT THIS SHOW

Best known as a member of the GRAMMY-winning vocal group Sweet Honey in the Rock, Christie Dashiell debuts at SFJAZZ with a tribute to the composers who blurred the lines between jazz, soul, and popular music.

A Washington, D.C.–born, North Carolina–raised jazz vocalist, Dashiell is known widely for her warm, expressive delivery that has earned her a place among today's most compelling voices in jazz. Her debut album, Time All Mine, charted on Billboard's Jazz Album lists, and her sophomore release, 2025’s Journey in Black, earned her first GRAMMY nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album and a rare five-star “masterpiece” review in DownBeat magazine.

Dashiell has recorded and performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, trumpeter Marquis Hill, and drummer Terri Lynn Carrington, with whom she collaborated on their GRAMMY-nominated release We Insist 2025!. The album is a masterful reimagining of drummer/composer Max Roach's epochal, politically charged 1961 album We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite, featuring Dashiell’s powerful instrument standing on equal footing with the legendary Abbey Lincoln’s original performance.

For this special Hotplate performance, Dashiell pairs her own deeply soulful originals with reimagined works by composers like Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Burt Bacharach, spotlighting melody, lyricism, and groove as the connective tissue between generations.
