Bach lived in a precarious time. War, disease, infant mortality, and social instability were part of everyday life. His music serves as a powerful counterweight, radiating confidence, inner peace and focus. Anna Dennis is among the most refined sopranos of her generation. In 2023, she was honoured with a Royal Philharmonic Society Award. Maarten Engeltjes, the founder of PRJCT Amsterdam, enjoys international acclaim as a countertenor.

The works in this programme showcase the deeply human and introspective sides of Bach. Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut and Ich habe genug will be performed in their entirety tonight. They are among Bach’s most cherished and famous cantatas for solo voice. Instrumental sinfonias frame this internal landscape with an almost meditative breath. Everything culminates in the Et in unum Dominum from the Mass in B Minor. Anna Dennis’s agile voice, pleasant and glowing, merges subtly with the equally radiant and intimate sound of Maarten Engeltjes.
