Igor Levit, hailed by The New York Times as one of ‘the most important artists of his generation’, rounds out his four-concert survey of sonatas from the early and middle stages of Beethoven’s creative life with a programme framed by two firm audience favourites. He begins with the Piano Sonata Op. 31 No. 2 ‘Tempest’, with its revolutionary opening recitative and dramatic answering phrases, supposedly inspired by Shakespeare’s eponymous play, and progresses to the ‘Pathétique’ via two majestic four-movement sonatas.
