About the Event
A chance to hear new works by composers from the LSO Helen Hamlyn Panufnik Composers’ Scheme, plus high energy from US composer John Adams.
Tonight’s concert is a feast of new music, composed by recent alumni of the LSO Helen Hamlyn Panufnik Composers’ Scheme. The scheme offers six early-career composers the chance to write for a symphony orchestra and hear their work performed by one of the world’s finest ensembles.
We’re excited to feature music by Laila Arafah and Yunho Jeong, both from last year’s cohort, plus a trumpet concerto by Joel Järventausta (from the 2018/19 intake). Bookending this showcase are suites of orchestral music from two of John Adams’s operas: Doctor Atomic and Nixon in China.
LSO’s Principal Trumpet James Fountain is the soloist for Joel Järventausta’s Trumpet Concerto. Leading the LSO in this celebration of composing talent is conductor Elim Chan, a frequent guest with the orchestra and 2014 Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition winner.
This concert will end at 9pm, including a 20-minute interval (timings subject to change).
