George Crotty: Song of the Birds - Live Recording
About the Event
George Crotty is a Canadian-born, NYC/Berlin-based cellist, composer, and bandleader whose work re-imagines the role of the cello in contemporary music. As a solo artist and with his trio, Crotty makes multicultural chamber music for the 21st century. His compositions fuse jazz improvisation and Western classical rigour with global music traditions into a seamless, surprising new whole. His music invites comparisons to such diverse artists as Tomeka Reid, Jan Garbarek, and Dave Holland.
At Morphine Raum, Crotty will be performing new solo work for cello, pedals, and accompanying field recordings. Created in free time and in co-creation with nature in remote regions in the Colombian Andes, Canadian Rockies, and American Adirondacks. His approach is informed by his close study of birdsong, translating their rhythmic and timbral qualities onto the cello.
