About the Event

Composer-performer Laura Jurd's unique voice as an improvising trumpet player is at the heart of everything she creates. Her music celebrates and innovates the rich traditions of jazz and folk music whilst taking twists and turns that prove Laura to be one of the UK's most distinctive composer-performers in contemporary music. Emma Rawicz is a young saxophonist, bandleader and composer with an astonishing musical maturity. At just 24 years of age, Rawicz has achieved a huge amount, including the release of four critically acclaimed albums “Incantation”, “Chroma”, “Big Visit” and INKYRA, extensive headline tours across 15 countries, appearances in high profile festivals and venues including concerts featuring as a soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and with the German SWR Radio Big Band at a sold out Berlin Philharmonie. Laura Jurd As a composer she has collaborated with the London Sinfonietta, the Festival of New Trumpet Music, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the Ligeti Quartet to name a few. She has performed throughout the UK, Europe and beyondd with Mercury-nominated band Dinosaur and under-her own name, having played the likes of North Sea, Montréal and Molde International Jazz festivals to name a few. Emma says: 'For me, Laura has to be one of the most unique and distinctive voices in jazz and improvised music right now. As a player and composer, her artistry is totally unmistakable and always at the highest level. Laura was also probably the first mentor figure I had, and I had the good fortune of being in her ensemble on the NYJC course at age fifteen, having only played the saxophone for a few months at that point! Laura is yet another musician who has taught me the importance of joy, generosity and fearless commitment in improvised music, and sharing the stage with her once again in quintet will doubtless be another exhilarating and inspiring experience!
