Damián Nueva Quintet: Afro-Cuban Groove
Lineup
About the Event
Cuban double bassist, composer and actor Damián Nueva brings his quintet to Ronnie Scott’s for an evening of powerful Afro-Cuban grooves infused with jazz.
Raised in a legendary Cuban musical family and trained by Orlando López “Cachaito” of Buena Vista Social Club, Nueva grew up immersed in classical, Afro-Cuban and jazz traditions. He has performed internationally with Oscar Valdés’ Diakara Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra and Lizt Alfonso’s Afro-Flamenco Dance Company, as well as appearing as a musician in the Netflix series The Eddy.
Damián has collaborated with artists including Didier Lockwood, John Legend, Glen Ballard, Zaz, Fatboy Slim, OUM, Guy Sigsworth, Joachim Horsley, Roberto Fonseca and Ayo, and participated in Afro Bach by Joachim Horsley, which received a Latin Grammy nomination.
With his quintet, Nueva draws on the vibrant sounds of the streets of Havana, bringing together deep-rooted Cuban rhythms, jazz improvisation and a bold and contemporary vision of Afro-Cuban jazz. His album Orisun reflects this musical vision, capturing the energy and groove at the heart of his sound.
“The shimmering colors of the Island of Cuba, with the great Damian Nueva leading a high-flying quintet.”
