Tom Maciel is a Brazilian multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer whose career spans Brazil, Portugal, and Germany. Born in São Paulo, he has been based in Europe since 2016, first establishing himself in Lisbon — where he studied at Hot Clube de Portugal and the Lisbon School of Music — and currently active in Berlin, where he has lived since 2023. His work blends jazz, Brazilian music, electronic textures, and pop, combining a distinctive musical voice with a strong presence on stage. He performs regularly in the Berlin scene in venues such as the Zigzag Jazz Club and the Kreuzberg Festsaal, and has appeared in festivals and concert halls across Portugal, France, and Brazil with projects like Cíntia and Nomad Nenúfar. Recognized by both critics and peers, he received the RTP/Festa do Jazz Award for Best New portuguese Artist in 2022, consolidating his position within the European music circuit.
Intro is the debut album of Tom Maciel’s solo project and marks a new artistic direction in his career. Moving away from the primarily instrumental focus of his previous work, Maciel places songwriting at the center of this project — using his own voice and lyrics as a way to explore personal and political themes with greater immediacy.
Musically, the album builds a hybrid sound world where complex harmonies rooted in jazz meet rhythms influenced by electronic music and elements of Brazilian traditions such as forró and maracatu. Much of the record was composed, recorded, and produced by the artist himself, resulting in an intimate and handcrafted approach that values human expression and organic sound, even when combined with electronic textures.
Across its tracks, Intro navigates a space that is both deeply personal and widely relatable, touching on themes such as emotional transformation, identity, displacement, and social critique. Blending introspective lyricism with immersive sonic landscapes, the album offers a listening experience that is both experimental and emotionally direct.
The album takes on a new dimension in a live setting, presented in a trio format with Axel Filip and Trigo Santana. Together, the three musicians recreate and expand the sonic universe of Intro through a performance that is dynamic, interactive, and open to improvisation — a central element in Tom Maciel’s artistic language.
The concert balances the intimacy of the songs with moments of greater intensity and sonic exploration, drawing from both jazz traditions and contemporary alternative music. The performance emphasizes physical presence and real-time communication, reinforcing the human aspect of music-making in an increasingly digital landscape.
Designed for jazz clubs, mid-sized venues, and live music spaces, the show offers an engaging and contemporary experience that bridges composition, improvisation, and a strong aesthetic identity.
