About the Event
Dramatic, passionate, plaintive – works in C minor have a character all their own. Franz Schubert wrote his poignant C minor quartet movement at the age of just 17. Johannes Brahms spent almost 20 years refining his darkly defiant Op. 51 No. 1. Both stand in the shadow of Beethoven: his Quartet, Op. 59 No. 1, may be cast in the brighter sound world of F major, yet its musical density and expressive force already anticipate Romanticism. In the exhilarating finale, Beethoven draws on a popular Russian theme in homage to Prince Razumovsky, who commissioned the work.
