Exceptional musicians unite Arab and Western traditions

The Amsterdam Cello Biennale and the Ud Festival are joining forces to celebrate two exceptional musicians who have masterfully blended Arab and Western traditions. Together with musicians from the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, cellist Anwar Saidi and oud player Omar Lazrak pay tribute to Said Chraibi, the king of the ud, ten years after his death.

Omar Lazrak was a student of Chraibi and worked closely with him for many years. In this program, he continues Chraibi’s legacy not by copying its form, but by conveying the spirit of his music. Cellist Anwar Saidi is among the small group of musicians worldwide who fully master both classical technique and Arabic modal systems, and combines them in his playing. Alongside compositions by Chraibi, the program also features new work of their own, ranging from Granada to Baghdad.

Over the course of fifteen years, the Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest has grown into a successful, internationally oriented, and renowned ensemble. The Muziekgebouw celebrates their anniversary with a 'best of', ranging from an immersive hadra to concerts during the Ud Festival.
