Barbican
Arcadi Volodos in Recital
About the Event
The award-winning pianist returns to the Hall, performing a moving programme of Schubert and Chopin that is personal and deeply introspective.
Opening the night with a sonata considered to be one of Schubert’s most serene piano works, the recital commences with meditative hushed tones before shifting to dramatic contrasts reflecting the composer's dreamy and expansive style, marking his shift from Beethoven's strong influence in his earlier works.
The programme journeys deeper still into the human psyche with pieces by Chopin that explore the intense longing of his home, Poland.
The evening culminates with Chopin's sonata exploring themes of love and death, expressing the composers inward reflections of existential matters, born from a funeral march and inspired by patriotic sentiment.
