About the Event

Led by rising UK jazz clarinettist and vocalist Giulia Marro, the Giulia Marro Quartet brings together some of London’s most exciting young musicians for an evening of swing. Blending original compositions with deep cuts from the Great American Songbook, the quartet draws inspiration from the chamber-like interplay of Jimmy Giuffre and the expressive writing of Carla Bley. With rich storytelling, melodic improvisation and a distinctive sound, the band creates music that feels both rooted in tradition and strikingly individual. Rising star of the UK jazz scene, clarinet player and vocalist Giulia Marro released her debut album A Portrait of Giulia in March 2025, marking her arrival as a distinctive new voice on the jazz scene. Rooted in tradition yet unmistakably personal, the album showcases Giulia’s deep connection to jazz alongside her flair for storytelling, lyricism and expressive improvisation. Giulia studied at both the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague, experiences that helped shape her refined technique and broad musical outlook. Her playing is steeped in the jazz tradition, drawing heavily from the swing and bebop eras, while remaining fresh and current through her emotive phrasing, rhythmic sensitivity and melodic playing. This new quartet of London’s most exciting young musicians features Nick Manz on piano (BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Finalist 2022) , Ben Love on double bass and Jack Thomas on drums. As a composer, she is inspired by Carla Bley, Jimmy Giuffre and Duke Ellington. She weaves together influences from jazz, folk and blues, creating music that feels both familiar and strikingly individual. Praised for the clarity of her musical vision, the North London Jazz Collective notes: “Giulia’s composing and playing combines creativity and craft in an immensely memorable fashion and truly marks her out as a Voice with a capital ‘V’...” As an accomplished bandleader, Giulia has led ensembles across the UK, performing to sold out audiences in jazz venues and festivals across the UK, captivating audiences with her warm, melody-centred clarinet sound. In addition to her work as a clarinetist, Giulia is also a compelling vocalist. Taking inspiration from legendary singers such as Carmen McRae and Betty Carter, her vocal style reflects the same sensitivity, swing and emotional depth that define her instrumental playing. This quartet will be bringing swing to the forefront through original music and deep cut selections from the Great American Songbook.
