About the Event

New York-based pianist Lawrence Fields brings his groove-based Supersonic Trio to London for the first time, taking the classic jazz piano trio format and pushing it into new territory with elements taken from funk, soul, and hip-hop.

Since the release of his debut album To the Surface in 2024, which received four stars from DownBeat and was named among the year’s best albums, Fields’ career as a bandleader has accelerated rapidly. A regular member of bands led by Joe Lovano and Chief Adjuah, he has also worked with Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton and Nate Smith.

At the heart of the Supersonic Trio is Fields’ piano and keyboards alongside electric bassist Kyle Miles and drummer Elé Howell. Together they draw on the sounds of Fields’ youth - soul, funk and hip-hop - while following in the tradition of musicians including Ramsey Lewis, Les McCann, George Duke, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock and Geri Allen.

Fields is a technically formidable pianist, equally at home on grand piano, electric piano and Fender Rhodes, while Miles brings an unusually expansive approach to the electric bass and Howell adds a powerful, highly responsive rhythmic voice. The result is a piano trio with the swing, interplay and improvisation of the classic format, powered by funk grooves, hip-hop rhythms and the electric textures of Rhodes and synths.

“Strikes that perfect chord between piano trios past and present.”
— All About Jazz

“He brings the piano trio format into the present without ignoring the past displaying the dexterity of Peterson and the introspection of Evans as well as his own individual approach... a must to check out.”
— Bebop Spoken Here
