About the Event
It is the fate of myths to be taken up and reworked across the centuries, every time permeated by the ever-changing human Zeitgeist. The myth of Ariadne – universal in its interplay of love, oppression, political cunning, salvation and the alternation of deceptive joy and pain – has repeatedly inspired musicians in some of their finest creations, from Claudio Monteverdi to Richard Strauss.
This musical programme focuses on the myth of Ariadne in the 18th Century, following a double thread: an artistic one, tracing its narrative variations, and a geographical one, moving through the major European musical capitals, from London to Vienna via Naples and Dresden.
