With his debut album as bandleader, Still Waters, released on Kurt Rosenwinkel’s Heartcore Records, Niklas Lukassen delves into a multifaceted world of sound. His artistic vision is underpinned by his talents as a composer, bassist and singer (Luna). His internationally acclaimed quartet, featuring alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder, pianist Kit Downes and drummer Francesco Ciniglio, brings together captivating individualists from the scenes of Amsterdam, London, Paris and Berlin to form a shape-shifting, synergistic entity. Like water, the ensemble carves a path through multi-layered realms in flowing improvisations. In doing so, it creates mighty waves through deliberately daring collisions. Enriched by guest appearances from Kurt Rosenwinkel, Celine Rudolph, Wanja Slavin and Geoffroy de Masure, unimagined depths are explored in seemingly tranquil musical waters.
