About the Event
Senegalese bassist, composer and vocalist Alune Wade presents New African Orleans, an ambitious new project exploring the deep musical connections between West Africa, Lagos and New Orleans.
Blending Afrobeat, juju rhythms and West African traditions with the brass band sounds and jazz heritage of New Orleans, Wade traces a musical journey across the Atlantic through original compositions and inspired reinterpretations. Drawing on influences ranging from Dr. John and Charlie Parker to Manu Dibango, New African Orleans is a vibrant celebration of shared musical roots, rich in rhythm, melody and groove.
One of Africa's most accomplished bassists, Wade has performed and recorded with artists including Marcus Miller, Joe Zawinul, Salif Keita, Bobby McFerrin, Gregory Porter and Fatoumata Diawara. With New African Orleans, he brings a fresh perspective to the enduring dialogue between African and American music, celebrating a cultural exchange that continues to shape both traditions.
“Wade has been delving deep into his ‘private musical laboratory’, seeking a fusion between various passions – jazz, highlife, Afrobeat.... can take its place alongside the best work by many of the artists with whom he has collaborated across the past decades: Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N’Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck and more.”
