About the Event
Exploring the vocal legacy of Mendelssohn and students of his Leipzig Conservatory
Felix Mendelssohn’s influence as teacher and composer provides the golden thread that connects the works in Benjamin Appl’s absorbing programme. The German baritone, with Sholto Kynoch as his sensitive partner, explore the legacy that developed after Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatory in 1843 and taught there alongside Robert and Clara Schumann. Grieg, Busoni, Delius, Arthur Sullivan and Stanford were among the Conservatory’s later alumni, while Albert, the music-loving Prince Consort, received guidance in composition from Mendelssohn following his marriage to Queen Victoria.
