Eddie Henderson Quartet

Eddie Henderson, American trumpeter and Grammy award winning artist, is a living jazz legend. He is a versatile and innovative musician whose career has spanned more than six decades and he has has left an indelible mark on the genre's history with his unique style and instrumental virtuosity.

It was at the age of 16 that Eddie first met Miles Davis when he came to stay at the family home. Miles took Eddie to see the latest version of his band, at the Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach California, which featured Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane in the front line. The music that Eddie heard that night changed the direction of his life and put him on course to become one of the foremost trumpet players, and one of the true greats, in the history of Jazz Music.

Eddie continues to be one of the most original trumpet players in jazz today. At 86 years old he remains very much at the height of his musical prowess, and continues to produce music on a par with the greatest musicians in the history of jazz.

This particular quartet, which has toured together for many years, has the special chemistry of a group that gelled since its inception and has matured over time. The band features Stephen Keogh on drums, Arnie Somogyi on bass, and the rising star pianist Mātyās Gayer; finalist at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition 2014 and 2015, and winner of the most prestigious Hungarian jazz prize, the Gramofon Award 2015.

From an early age, Henderson was influenced by jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, an experience that shaped his musical career. After his studies at the San Francisco Conservatory, he moved to New York to pursue his professional career, where he collaborated with prominent jazz figures such as Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon. However, he was a member of the Mwandishi band of pianist Herbie Hancock where Henderson shone with his own light, highlighting his talent and creativity.

Beginning in the 1970s, Henderson established himself as the leader of his own groups, exploring a wide range of styles within jazz, from bebop to fusion. His discography as a soloist is extensive and acclaimed, with albums considered classic of the genre such as Realization, Heritage, Inside Out, awarded the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Album, and his most recent and stimulating album Witness to History, an authentic jewel.
