Christ-Stéphane Boizi 'As The Spirit Leads'

About the Event

Rooted in the hard‑bop tradition and shaped by a gospel upbringing, the album reflects Boizi’s Christian faith, approaching the bandstand as a space of trust, humility, and spiritual guidance. A product of Kinetika Bloco and an alumnus of Tomorrow’s Warriors, As The Spirit Leads, released on Banger Factory Records, stands as an uncompromising expression of faith, spontaneity, and collective intent. Christ‑Stéphane Boizi is one of the most compelling emerging voices on the UK jazz scene, recognised for performances of rare intensity, spiritual depth, and collective presence. A London‑based trombonist and composer, Boizi’s music is shaped in the lineage of the hard bop tradition and grounded in the gospel music of his upbringing. These influences come together in a sound that is expressive, rooted, and deeply personal, music that places faith, spontaneity, and the living moment at its centre. These values are central to Boizi’s debut album As The Spirit Leads, released on Banger Factory Records. The album stands as a personal and uncompromising expression of Christian faith, reflecting Boizi’s belief in the guidance of the Holy Spirit in both life and music. Across the record, improvisation is treated as a practice of trust and humility, with the bandstand approached as a shared spiritual and musical space where deep listening and collective intent shape the music in real time. Boizi’s musical journey began with Kinetika Bloco, the London‑based youth music charity carnival band where he first discovered his voice as a performer and improviser. He later became an alumnus of the Tomorrow’s Warriors Development Programme, an experience that proved formative both musically and personally. Through this community, he was mentored by leading figures in UK jazz including Andy Grappy, Gary Crosby OBE, and Byron Wallen, shaping an artist firmly grounded in tradition while committed to pushing the music forward. He is a graduate of Trinity Laban, where he completed his Jazz Performance degree. In recent years, Christ‑Stéphane Boizi has come to the fore as a bandleader with the Christ‑Stéphane Boizi Sextet (CS6), bringing together a group of musicians united by deep listening, trust, and collective intent. The sextet is recognised for its emotional honesty, dynamic interplay, and an approach to performance that prioritises presence and responsiveness in the moment. Their music is shaped as much by shared experience on the bandstand as by composition, resulting in performances that feel open, grounded, and alive. Boizi and the sextet have performed extensively across the UK, appearing at venues and festivals including PizzaExpress Live Soho, King’s Place, The Jazz Café, the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, We Out Here Festival, Brick Lane Jazz Festival, and the EFG London Jazz Festival. Alongside his work as a bandleader, he remains an active contributor to London’s jazz community as a performer and collaborator, while continuing to develop a distinctive artistic voice rooted in faith and collective expression. As The Spirit Leads offers a clear sense of Christ‑Stéphane’s artistic direction, inviting audiences into a body of work rooted in depth, faith, and collective awareness.
