"Feed The Fire" Presents: Yvonne Rogers Quartet with Jermaine Paul, Mark Ferber & Nicolaus Gelin
Lineup
About the Event
Yvonne Rogers is a pianist and composer from coastal Maine, now based in Brooklyn, NY. Described as a “singular voice in contemporary music,” (Thierry De Clemensat, Paris Move) with a sound that is “beautifully controlled yet entirely free in spirit,” (Terence Collie, UK Jazz News), her music is at once fiercely innovative and playfully inviting. For her debut performance as a bandleader on the west coast, she will present original compositions including a preview of pieces to be released on her upcoming quartet album “Brackish.”
"Feed the Fire" Curated by Nicole McCabe
Named for Geri Allen's composition of the same name, "Feed the Fire" is a series built to fuel exactly that — the work of the next generation of female musicians who are pushing boundaries, commanding the stage, and playing entirely on their own terms. Each night brings together artists who aren't waiting for permission to be bold, technical, experimental, or fully themselves on the bandstand. This is a stage for the players redefining what it means to lead, compose, and improvise right now.
But "Feed the Fire" also looks backward as it looks forward. Geri Allen, like so many women who shaped the language of jazz and improvised music, didn't always get her flowers while she was here to receive them. This series exists to close that gap — spotlighting the women carrying the tradition forward while honoring the ones whose contributions built the ground they stand on.
Each year, Sam First will feature a new curator for thuis series, and we are pleased to share that saxophonist/composer Nicole McCabe is the first curator for this series!
