About the Event
One of Africa's leading contemporary jazz voices, Mozambican saxophonist Moreira Chonguiça makes his Ronnie Scott's debut with his internationally acclaimed band. Renowned for his commanding stage presence and expressive saxophone playing, he performs music from across his seven-album catalogue alongside new material, blending jazz, Afro-fusion, funk and the musical traditions of Mozambique.
A prolific bandleader, composer and producer, Chonguiça has released a series of acclaimed albums and collaborated with artists across Africa and beyond, including the late Manu Dibango. Inspired by Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and Dibango, he has developed a distinctive musical voice that balances his Mozambican heritage with a global outlook.
Beyond his work as a performer, Chonguiça has played a defining role in the development of jazz in Mozambique. Through the Morejazz Festival and the Morejazz Big Band, he has championed new generations of musicians while helping bring contemporary African jazz to audiences around the world.
Joined by his outstanding seven-piece band, Chonguiça delivers an energetic live show that brings together contemporary African jazz and the musical traditions of Mozambique.
“Despite fame in his native Mozambique, the saxophonist never showboats, but employs his talents to colour the music in the way Wayne Shorter did for Weather Report.”
