Barbican
Trees with London Symphony Orchestra
About the Event
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Green unites with Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Caroline Shaw and award-winning author and environmentalist Rebecca Solnit in a live orchestral film experience.
Presented as part of our Caroline Shaw residency, Trees receives its world premiere, with an original score composed by Shaw.
Sam Green is one of documentary filmmaking’s most innovative and captivating artists. Known for his uniquely conceived ‘live documentaries’, his films are screened on stage as he narrates in person while musicians perform the score, creating a truly live cinema experience.
Trees is a profoundly moving, unique, and ephemeral study of humankind’s relationship with our earthly cohabitants – the silent witnesses to humanity across countless events and generations – placing our role in a broader perspective. Featuring actress Judi Dench, Poet Laureate Ada Limón, scientists, and stories from around the world, Trees marks Green’s most ambitious film yet.
Commissioned by The Boston Symphony Orchestra; New World Symphony; Oregon Symphony Orchestra; Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts; Wiener Festwochen; Barbican Centre; Holland Festival; Stanford Live @ Stanford University; Duke Arts @ Duke University, Durham, NC; The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi; Green Music Center of Sonoma State University; and Arizona Arts Live at University of Arizona.
