Solomon’s Knot

Dramatic rhythmic gestures and affecting dissonances catch the mood of Miserere, ‘Have mercy on me, O God’, in the second of Jan Dismas Zelenka’s two settings of the penitential psalm. Solomon’s Knot begins its programme of works by the Bohemian composer with this arresting work, written late in his life. The conductorless Baroque music collective, described by The Tablet as ‘little short of miraculous’, includes a rare chance to hear the meditative processional music Zelenka wrote around 1709 for the Feast of Corpus Christi and the highly expressive instrumental writing of Hipocondrie, a masterly study in melancholy and mood swings.
