Carducci String Quartet

Philip Glass composed what became his Ninth String Quartet as incidental music in 2019 for a Broadway production of Shakespeare’s King Lear starring Glenda Jackson in the title role. ‘I began picturing what it must have been like to see this piece for the first time in 1606,’ notes the composer. The Carducci String Quartet follows Glass’s imaginative steps through the five-movement concert version of his Lear music before diving headlong into the darting stream of energy that propels the opening of Mendelssohn’s Op. 44 No. 1.
