About the Event
Currently based in Brooklyn by way of Richmond, Virginia and Champaign, Illinois, trombonist and composer Reginald Chapman works at the intersection of jazz tradition, hip-hop production, gospel harmony, experimental electronic music, and brass-band energy. With a
doctorate in jazz and a cognate in modern classical composition, Chapman brings a deeply studied approach to music that remains
unpretentious, groove-driven, and open to discovery. That balance has earned him a reputation as a musician’s musician, connecting with fellow players, close listeners, and beat-heads alike.
Chaphouse is the Brooklyn-based octet at the center of that work. Layered horn writing opens naturally into collective improvisation, while originals and reimagined songs become starting points rather than fixed destinations. Melodies move through the ensemble, solos
grow from the pocket instead of interrupting it, and every performance follows a different route guided by the conversation unfolding
onstage. The result is a sound that preserves the classics, embraces the present, and keeps reaching toward what comes next.
