Boris Giltburg — Beethoven Sonatas Cycle

With two recitals in March and June, Boris Giltburg completes his complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano sonatas at Flagey. In the Beethoven Year 2027, he brings to a close this project that began last season.

In this recital, he presents four sonatas that together offer a surprisingly multifaceted portrait of Beethoven’s pianistic universe. The lesser-known Piano Sonata No. 22 in F major reveals a light-hearted and playful Beethoven, while the Appassionata, composed immediately afterwards, drives the piano to its expressive and technical extremes. The earlier Piano Sonata No. 12 in A-flat major is best known for its Funeral March, which was also performed at Beethoven’s own funeral. Finally, the intimate Piano Sonata No. 28 in A major, described by Beethoven himself as “a series of impressions and reveries”, opens the door to his introspective late style.
