About the Event
Joey Curreri is a Los Angeles–born, New York–based trumpeter and composer. A sought‑after performer and recording artist, he appears throughout NYC, tours internationally and nationally, and records with artists including Joris Dudli, Vincent Herring, Makoto Ozone, Deron Johnson, Miguel Zenon and Christine Jensen. As a bandleader, he performs with his own groups in New York, tours with his co‑led project Tabula Rasa, and has released four records to date.
For his set at Close Up on September 15, he’ll be joined by fellow trumpeter Marquis Hill, Kanoa Mendenhall on bass, and Miguel Russell on drums, as part of the Festival of New Trumpet Music evening curated by Dave Adewumi.
Marquis Hill is an internationally acclaimed trumpeter, composer, and bandleader from Chicago. His musical style stems from African-American music, incorporating hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, neo-soul, and jazz into his playing. Winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Trumpet Competition, Hill is also a committed mentor, treating the music as a living art passed forward through education and community. He has performed with a wide spectrum of leading artists, including Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Boney James, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano, and his trailblazing Chicago peer Makaya McCraven, while maintaining an active touring schedule with his own group.
