A sense of mystery surrounds Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s last three symphonies. Why were they composed? Were they really – as some musicologists have suggested – Mozart’s “symphonic legacy”, written with an awareness of his own mortality? Whatever the circumstances of their composition, one thing is certain: each of these symphonies is an astonishing achievement, and possesses a distinctive musical personality – from the forward-looking E-flat major symphony and the turbulent G minor symphony to the “Jupiter” symphony, with its irrepressible energy. As part of the Signs & Wonders Biennale, the Freiburger Barockorchester explores the enduring fascination of these remarkable works.
