Deschanel Gordon is widely regarded as one of the most preeminent young pianists and bright musical prospects on the contemporary UK scene. Born and raised in Hackney, his musical journey began amidst a rich domestic backdrop of gospel and reggae. At age ten, a video of the legendary virtuoso Oscar Peterson sparked a passion for jazz that would shape his artistic path. He refined his craft through revered youth initiatives, including the Hackney Creative Jazz Ensemble and the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy.
Gordon shot to national prominence after winning the prestigious BBC Young Jazz Musician award in 2020. Since then, his distinct sound—rooted in deep swing, infectious groove, and his Jamaican heritage—has made him a highly sought-after collaborator across multiple genres. Beyond leading his own ensemble, he is a core member of pop sensation Olivia Dean’s band and has performed alongside leading figures such as Courtney Pine, Nubya Garcia, Cassie Kinoshi’s Seed Ensemble, Mark Kavuma, Jean Toussaint, Patrick Bartley, Joe Farnsworth, and Ezra Collective.
His compelling live performances have graced London’s most iconic venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, the Jazz Café, the 606 Club, the Barbican, Cadogan Hall, and PizzaExpress Live. Internationally, Gordon has brought his music to major festivals and celebrated stages across Europe and the US, including New York’s Winter Jazz Festival, Moods in Zurich, Fasching in Sweden, and Jazz TM in Romania.
Joined by his trio for this afternoon performance at PizzaExpress Live Soho, Gordon presents an expressive, multi-layered repertoire spanning classic jazz standards, fresh original compositions, and cross-cultural influences.
