About the Event
Elusive dreams from Per Nørgård, a soaring Sibelius symphony, plus Thomas Adès conducts pianist Bertrand Chamayou in his own vibrant evocation of the Creation.
Per Nørgård’s Dream Play is a mesmerising exploration of the nature of reconciliation. Described by the composer as a ‘tournament of a dream’, the piece brings contrasting musical ideas together in ‘fondest embraces’. It’s a remarkable show of how disparate elements can unite in magical synthesis.
Thomas Adès’ piano concerto In Seven Days charts the story of the Creation in seven kaleidoscopic movements. Sibelius’ Fifth, perhaps the most iconic of his seven symphonies, begins with the seed of a haunting horn call. From there, tenderness optimism rule right up to the final crashing chords.
Don’t miss the chance to see Thomas Adès conduct his own music, with the extraordinary French pianist Bertrand Chamayou bringing the composer’s theatrical piano concerto to life.
The concert will finish at approximately 8.50pm, including a 20-minute interval (timings subject to change).
