The NY Choro Quartet is comprised of some of the best choro players in America, all Brazilian-born and long established in New York. Choro is Brazil’s first urban popular music, going back to the 1800s — virtuosic, fast-moving, and built on the interplay of musicians who can anticipate each other’s instincts. The music is part of the players, and they perform as musicians who have spent decades in the most demanding scene in the world.
Pianist and accordionist Vitor Gonçalves has performed with Hermeto Pascoal, Maria Bethânia, and Itiberê Zwarg in Brazil, and has since been featured on NPR’s Jazz Night in America and collaborated with Anat Cohen, Vinícius Cantuária, and Cyro Baptista. Celebrated seven-string guitarist Cesar Garabini has shared stages with Anat Cohen, Leny Andrade, and Marcos Sacramento. Bassist Eduardo Belo, a Fulbright recipient, is among the most in-demand players in the city, with credits including Michel Camilo, Romero Lubambo, Lee Konitz, Duduka da Fonseca, and Claudio Roditi. Drummer Dennis Bulhões, author of two books on Brazilian drumming, has toured internationally with Bebel Gilberto and Hamilton de Holanda.
