Isabelle Faust: Solo Bach Marathon

About the Event

Indulge in a feast of Bach, as Isabelle Faust takes on the formidable challenge of playing all of his music for unaccompanied violin in a single performance. Bach’s sonatas and partitas for solo violin are almost sacred to many violinists. The journey towards mastering their technical, intellectual and expressive depths lasts a lifetime. When music to represent the heights of human achievement was chosen for the Voyager Golden Record, launched into interstellar space in 1977, a movement from Partita No. 3 made the cut. In the sonatas, preludes that sound freshly improvised lead to fugues where the soloist plays several interweaving lines of melody. The partitas are sets of courtly dances, carefree gigues contrasting with stately sarabandes. Isabelle Faust’s recording was described by Gramophone as ‘the most definitive modern performance of these extraordinary works’, and now you can experience her understated brilliance live. Please note this performance lasts around 3 hours and 20 minutes, including a 30 minute interval.
