Igor Levit’s recording of the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven, released to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth, prompted The Sunday Times to praise ‘the freshness of his readings’, which ‘makes the music leap off the page with invigorating technical bravura’. He marks the bicentenary of Beethoven’s death this year with four recitals at Wigmore Hall, beginning with the poise and charm of Op. 2 No. 1, first published in Vienna in 1796, and directing his constantly alert mind to the heroic drama of the ‘Waldstein’ Sonata.
