Mozart, Beethoven & Schubert
Lineup
About the Event
Chamber Music with Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic
This program begins with two nicknamed trios featuring the clarinet. Mozart’s “Kegelstatt” takes its title from the game of skittles, an early form of bowling that Mozart enjoyed. His piece captures the spirit of the game as the musicians engage in lighthearted conversation and friendly competition. Similarly playful in tone, Beethoven’s “Gassenhauer” was inspired by a catchy tune commonly sung or whistled in the alleys (or “gassen”) of Vienna.
The evening takes a darker turn with a hair-raising arrangement of Schubert’s Erlkönig, where five cellists evoke the urgency of a galloping horse, a dying son, a father’s desperation, and the terrifying approach of death. Offering a bit of calm after the storm, the program concludes with Schubert’s somber yet serene String Quartet No. 13.
Come early and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine before the performance, starting at 6:30pm.
