The Potsdam–Berlin collective ALL ABOUT BIRDS joins forces with exceptional artist and violin virtuoso JON ROSE from Alice Springs (AU) to launch HINTERLAND, an ambitious project at the intersection of experimental music, improvisation, and contemporary composition. The quintet presents itself with an expanded set of instruments, employing unusual playing techniques as well as interactive, computer and sensor-based practices.

The project HINTERLAND comprises 10 duo and 10 trio constellations, which flow into one another and are presented across two sets. A defining feature of the project is the use of field recordings captured in the environments central to the musicians’ lives — the Outback surrounding Alice Springs, and the rural and urban landscapes around Potsdam and Berlin. By foregrounding the captivating soundscapes of exotic bird calls and beautifully noisy insects, the project seeks to reframe the often negatively connoted term “Hinterland”, revealing it instead as a space of acoustic richness, ecological diversity, and artistic inspiration.
